Biography

Shweta Basu Prasad is an Indian actress, who is famous for her work in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Bengali film industries. She took home a National Film Award for Best Child Actress for her debut film Makdee (2002).

Early Life

Born to a Bihar-based father, Anuj and West Bengal-based mother, Sarmishta, Shweta’s family shifted to Mumbai from Bihar, when she was very young. She completed her studies from R. N. Podar High School, Santacruz, Mumbai and later did her graduation in journalism and mass media.

Shweta started her career in Television series, and then moved to silver screen by debuting in the National Award Winning Film, Makdee in 2002. Shweta Basu Prasad was born to parents who were from Bihar and West Bengal. Her father Anuj was from Bihar and her mother Sarmishta was from West Bengal (Basu is her mother’s maiden name). The family moved from their native city Jamshedpur to Mumbai in her childhood. Shweta Basu studied Commerce in Mumbai’s R.N. Podar High School. At the age of 11 Shweta Basu started her career as a child artist in the movie Makdee peforming in dual roles named Chunni and Munni.

The director of the film is Vishal Bhardwaj whose directorial skill along with Shweta Basu’s acting secured National Film Award for Best Child Artist. After the success of Makdee, she was offered small screen projects in series such as Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Karishma Kaa Karishma. Shweta Basu’s mini stardom was triggered from her second film Iqbal of 2005 which ensured her future film offers in plenty. Basu’s character in the film fetched many accolades including Karachi International Film Festival’s Best Supporting Actress Award.

In the year 2006 Shweta Basu acted in Darna Zaroori Hai which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Her character in the film was Ashu. Her career took a turn in the year 2008 by her Telugu debutant film Kotha Bangaru Lokam. The film was an instant hint and commercial success. Swetha Basu along with Varun Sandesh as co-star got many awards in the Tollywood. Her other Telugu movies include Kalavar King, Alasyam Amrutham etc Swetha Basu after tasting success as an actress is currently trying her luck as a producer of a documentary. This turn in her career after a long wait is seen as a mature step in the coming years. The documentary titled Roots focuses on traditional Hindustani classical music.

According to Swetha, she was working on the documentary for the past 3 years which left her little time to sign even a single new film. She is interested in the documentary as her family roots were in traditional Hindustani classical music and she wants her efforts in proving its prominence even today. Swetha herself is proficient in Carnatic and Hindustani music and also a trained sitar player. According to her she wants to bring awareness about the value of traditional music to the younger generation. The documentary is said to be featuring few of the India’s prominent musicians such as A.R. Rahman. The target audience is mostly young generation and would be screened in colleges and schools.
