Manoj Bajpayee, also credited as Manoj Bajpai, is an Indian film actor who predominantly works in Hindi cinema and has also done Telugu and Tamil language films. He is the recipient of two National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards.

Early Life

Manoj Bajpayee was born on 23 April 1969 in Belwa, a small village near Narkatiaganj in West Champaran, Bihar. He has done his schooling in a hut school till 4th and then continued basic education from a school in Bettiah. He has completed his class 12th from Maharani Janaki College in Bettiah. He went to Ramjas College, University of Delhi for pursuing Graduation. He has been rejected four times at the National School of Drama and then he started his theatre with Barry John at Barry’s Drama School. Before entering into acting he has worked as a teacher at Salaam Balak Trust in Delhi. He has made his bollywood debut with 1994 film Drohkaal.



Bajpayee has started his career with the serial Swaabhimaan aired on Doordarshan. Later he appeared in a small role as Cop in Dastak Movie followed by Droh Kaal and Bandit Queen. He got his big break with 1998 film Satya directed by Ram Gopal Varma.

His performance as Bhiku Mhatre won him several awards. Another important film, where he played a dark character was Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film Aks in 2001, for which he again won many awards. His work was also appreciated in films like Zubeidaa and Pinjar, which earned him the National Film Award.


Bajpayee made his Bollywood debut with the commercially successful film Bandit Queen (1994). However, his first major role was in the Ram Gopal Varma directed Satya (1998), for which, he received both a National Film award as well as a Filmfare Award. The film worked wonders at the box office and Manoj`s performance as underworld don Bhiku Mhatre earned him a lot of critical acclaim. Manoj went on to act in critically acclaimed films like Shool (1999), Aks (2001), LOC: Kargil (2003) and Pinjar (2003). He also starred in Veer-Zaara (2004), Dus Kahaniyaan (2007), Jail (2009) and Raajneeti (2010). Manoj then delivered one of his best performances in Anurag Kashyap`s Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), for which he won the Stardust Award for Best Actor. His supporting role in the film, Satya (1999) won several awards such as the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, The Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor and The Zee Cine Award for Best Supporting Actor. A few of his recent releases include Chakravyuh (2012), Special 26 (2013), Satyagraha (2013) and the controversial, Aligarh (2016). His upcoming film, Traffic, is set to hit theatres in May, 2016.

Manoj Bajpayee will soon be seen in Ram Gopal Varma’s upcoming venture Sarkar 3. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Yami Gautham, Ronit Roy, Rohini Hattangadi and Bharat Dabholkar. He will also be seen in Neeraj Pandey’s flick Naam Shabana which also stars Taapsee Pannu, Akshay Kumar and many more. The film is all set to hit the screens on March 31, 2017.
